The color photograph of Earthrise - taken by Apollo 8 astronaut, William A. Anders, December 24, 1968. Although the photograph is usually mounted with the moon below the earth, this is how Anders saw it.
For the first time in the history of our species a human stood on another cosmic surface and observed and captured the beautiful image of a planet we all refer to as home, Earth. This was a quantum leap of awareness for me and our species. The beginning of an era of knowing just how beautiful, fragile and vulnerable we are as a guest species on Earth. A conscious awareness of just how temporary we are as a species as we have evolved to this point in the ongoing planet evolution. How our home Earth arrived and will be here long after we have left the landscape in our fragile human forms. On a much bigger scale looking from space how inescapable this awareness is of the consequences of our behaviors in relation to how long we are here and the quality of life we choose to create while we are here now and for those to follow. For me it became clear the question is not about when and if we will become extinct as a species but more of how long do we have and how can we change our behaviour to extend our stay, optimize the joys and pleasures of being here. .
For me it was months before I saw the image. At the time I was in the middle of the Vietnam War. I was 22 years old and had experienced the full experience of human suffering and destruction of an ecology through the acts of violence in war. I made it home from that experience of Vietnam and added it to my resume of life . This story of a quest for peace, social justice and fighting for preservation of this home Earth became my mission when I returned and the signing of the Clean Air and Water Act created the basis for the First Earth Day..
That was forty years ago this year. Great strides have been made and addressing the symptoms of our human behaviors and I honor all the efforts made to avert our current conditions. Yet historically and up to now I see a pattern of human behavior which has varied very little to contain our accelerated path to rapidly advancing our extinction as species in spite of our efforts through academic advancements, exspanded education, politics, economics, religion, philosophy and science.
The story I have visioned is a story very different in regards to how to slow, halt and extend this pattern. It is the story of changing our own evolution through the changing of our human brain. It is a story of planetary feedback to our brains in such a way as to alter the brain. Altering it in such a way we can not continue to embrace the delusion of we can delay our extinction without muting our brains. The story of how a perfect evolutionary pattern brought us to this point and how we can with intention alter our own evolution. The story of integrating our current technology, science and Earth itself into a matrix of intention to evolve ourselves.
My efforts address the problems have been rewarding and often frustrating as a social and environmental activist. However the outcomes have been rewarding as a teacher, founder and life member of a local based environmental organization(ECO) of Hendersonville North Carolina, still strong and active, co founder and member of the Hendersonville Food Cooperative, Owner of Earth Rise Expeditions a green company dedicated to connection others to the Earth and each other, and co founder and life member of Earthaven Eco Village and living Intentional Community in Western North Carolina. My realization at this point is I have addressed on the symptoms and not the source of the problems. In this story the source is our antiquated brains.
The photo above has been my focal point now for 42 years and remains an inspiration for my continued quest and inquiry, and creation of Earth Rise Planetary Designs, writing Save the Humans, and inspiring the Evolution Revolution. On my 60th birthday on the beach of Spirit Bay North Island of New Zealand I committed my remaining life forces a dream and vision of the co creation of a new paradigm of human behaviour. To co create a new story of how this might be done in a way which would end our current unsustainable behaviors on Earth and bring the current state of our evolution to giant step of change. Anatomical changes in our brains make up, organizations and function to stop our current behaviors of continued unnecessary suffering of our species and all we impact on and destruction of our ecologies hear on our home Earth.
Each cycle of the Moon and Sun are my reminders of just how grateful I am to be part of this Earth Ecology and just how much I desire to be part of the co creative evolution of the ongoing story of our species in the big circle of existance and being. It is a radical story and one which offers the dynamic of hope for me. A hope beyond the current paradigms of thinking I am aware of and one I wish to foster and nurture into it's fruition. I invite each of you to consider the story and create your own. And if you like partner in this dream and vision.
